Snowmass is the largest of the four mountains operated by Aspen Skiing Company and one of the biggest ski areas in North America. 3,362 acres of lift-served terrain. A 4,406-foot vertical drop — the largest in the United States. 98 named trails, three terrain parks, and some of the most storied expert skiing in Colorado. Whether it’s your first time on snow or you’re chasing untracked powder in Hanging Valley Wall, this guide breaks down the mountain lift by lift, pod by pod, so you can plan your day with confidence.
The Mountain at a Glance
Snowmass is organized into distinct pods of terrain, each served by its own lifts. The base village sits at 8,104 feet. The top of the gondola at Elk Camp reaches 11,775 feet, and the Cirque chairlift tops out at 12,510 feet — high enough to demand a minute to catch your breath when you unload. Beginner and lower-intermediate terrain lives at the bottom and at Elk Camp. True intermediate cruising dominates the middle of the mountain. Expert and extreme terrain crowns the top.
The Lifts: A Pod-by-Pod Breakdown
Elk Camp Gondola and Elk Camp Chair — The gondola base sits in Base Village and delivers you to the Elk Camp Meadows area. From there, the Elk Camp high-speed quad services long, mellow groomers perfect for intermediates and confident beginners. Elk Camp is also home to the Lost Forest summer adventure area and one of the best on-mountain lunch spots, the Elk Camp Restaurant.
Sheer Bliss and Big Burn — The Big Burn is Snowmass’s signature intermediate terrain: wide-open pitches with evenly-spaced trees, born from a 19th-century forest fire that cleared the hillside for skiing long before anyone dreamed of a ski resort. The Big Burn quad and the Sheer Bliss high-speed six-pack are the two main access lifts. If you ski only one pod, this is the one.
Sam’s Knob — The old heart of Snowmass. A high-speed quad climbs to 10,620 feet with cruisers on one side and moguls on the other. Sam’s Smokehouse at the top is a no-frills mid-mountain lunch institution.
Alpine Springs and Sneaky’s — A quieter pocket of intermediate and advanced terrain on skier’s left. Alpine Springs holds powder long after the rest of the mountain has been tracked out because it’s easy to miss.
High Alpine — The transition lift into Hanging Valley and the upper expert terrain. The High Alpine Restaurant here has one of the biggest mid-mountain decks in Colorado.
Hanging Valley Wall and Hanging Valley Glades — Hike-to expert terrain off the High Alpine lift. Steep, wooded, and often holding powder days after a storm. Not for the faint of heart.
The Cirque Poma — Snowmass’s famous surface lift climbs from the top of Sheer Bliss to 12,510 feet, the highest lift-served terrain on the mountain. From the top, Long Shot drops 5.3 miles through wilderness terrain — the longest run in the United States. A traverse right gives access to Gowdy’s, AMF, and the double-black chutes of the Cirque.
Two Creeks — The secondary base area on the east side of the mountain. Two Creeks is quieter than Snowmass Village base and offers direct access to Elk Camp, Alpine Springs, and a beautiful underused tree run back to the lot.
The Best Runs by Skill Level
For Beginners. Assay Hill at the base and the Elk Camp Meadows area above the gondola offer the gentlest pitches on the mountain. From Elk Camp, the green run Funnel lets first-timers see and feel real mountain terrain without any of the fear. Fanny Hill, the classic learn-to-ski run in Snowmass Village, is a wide groomed pitch that funnels directly back to the base.
For Intermediates. The Big Burn is the single best intermediate zone in Colorado. Start with Dallas Freeway, then progress to Sneaky’s, Powerline Glades, and Glissade. For long cruisers, drop off Elk Camp onto Grey Wolf or Bull Run. Sam’s Knob delivers a different kind of cruising with Max Park and Banzai Ridge.
For Advanced Skiers. Ride High Alpine and drop into Green Cabin, Campground, or Reidar’s. These are long, challenging blues and blacks with legitimate pitch. From the top of Sam’s Knob, check out Promenade and Mick’s Gully. Elk Camp’s Sunset Trail is a classic steep groomer for the end of the day.
For Experts. The Cirque is where Snowmass becomes a legendary mountain. Long Shot is the rite of passage — 5.3 miles of wilderness skiing back to the base of High Alpine. Gowdy’s and AMF deliver steep wide-open powder in the right conditions. The Hanging Valley Wall chutes — Rocky Mountain High, Wall 1, Baby Ruth — reward those willing to earn their turns on the hike-to gate.
Terrain Parks and Other Options
Snowmass has three terrain parks: the Snowmass Park near the base for beginners, the Makaha Park for progression, and the Lowdown Park at Elk Camp for advanced riders with larger jumps and rails. The Snowmass halfpipe was one of the original freestyle venues in the Aspen Skiing Company family and still draws riders every winter.
Beyond the lifts, Snowmass has an extensive cross-country network at Snowmass Cross Country and the Snowmass Club, plus snowshoe trails accessible from the Rim Trail trailheads. Snowcat tours and uphill skiing (with the right pass) round out the winter offerings.
Tickets, Passes, and the Ikon Pass
Lift tickets are sold through Aspen Snowmass. Snowmass is an Ikon Pass destination, with 5 or 7 days of access for full Ikon passholders and discounted access on Ikon Base. The Mountain Collective also includes days at Aspen Snowmass. If you’re skiing more than 4 days, a full Ikon Pass pays for itself fast. Book tickets early for the best prices — same-day window rates are the highest in Colorado.
Ski In, Ski Out from Stonebridge Condominiums
Stonebridge Condominiums sits in the heart of Snowmass Village with direct ski-in, ski-out access to Fanny Hill and the Village Express lift. That means you click in at your door, lap the mountain as long as you like, and ski straight back for lunch or a hot tub break. No driving. No parking. No shuttle. After a big day on the Burn or a hike into Hanging Valley, walking 40 yards back to a warm condo is the difference between a good ski trip and a great one.
