Snowmass Village sits in the heart of the Elk Mountains, surrounded by one of the most celebrated hiking networks in the American West. Within a short drive — and in many cases a short walk — from Stonebridge Condominiums, you can step onto trails that wind through aspen groves, climb to alpine lakes, cross wildflower meadows, and look out over the Maroon Bells, the most photographed peaks in Colorado. This guide walks through our favorite trails for every level of hiker, from easy valley strolls to serious backcountry days.
Maroon Bells Scenic Trail — The Iconic Introduction
No list of Snowmass area hikes is complete without Maroon Lake and the Maroon Bells Scenic Trail. Just a 20-minute drive from Stonebridge, the trailhead at Maroon Lake delivers you straight into the postcard. The paved loop around the lake is under two miles round-trip and wheelchair-accessible in places, making it perfect for families, grandparents, and anyone who wants the view without the effort.
For a more committed day, continue past the lake to Crater Lake (3.6 miles round-trip, 500 feet of gain). The trail climbs through aspen and spruce to a glacial cirque tucked right under the Bells themselves. During summer, shuttle buses run from Aspen Highlands to manage crowds — plan for an early morning start or a late-afternoon visit for the best light and smallest trailside crowd.
The Rim Trail — Snowmass Village's Signature Hike
The Rim Trail is the hike locals recommend first when visitors ask what to do. It traces the ridgeline above Snowmass Village with sweeping views across the Roaring Fork Valley toward Mt. Daly, Capitol Peak, and Snowmass Mountain. The full rim is about 8.7 miles, but most hikers take it in sections using the Nature Trail or Sequel Trail connectors.
The Rim Trail North is moderate and covered in wildflowers from June through August — lupine, paintbrush, columbine, arrowleaf balsamroot. The Rim Trail South climbs higher and delivers the dramatic overlooks you’ll want on your camera roll. You can start right from Snowmass Village and be on the ridge within 30 minutes.
Ditch Trail — Easy, Shaded, and Perfect for Morning Runs
The Ditch Trail follows an old irrigation ditch along the contour of the mountain just above Snowmass Village. It’s nearly flat, shaded for most of its length, and runs roughly 4.5 miles one-way, connecting the Anderson Ranch area to the Two Creeks neighborhood. This is the trail locals use for morning trail runs, sunset walks, and easy family outings. Pack water, sunscreen, and bug spray during peak summer.
Snowmass Creek Trail — Into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness
For hikers who want serious backcountry without technical climbing, the Snowmass Creek Trail is the classic. The trailhead sits about 25 minutes from Stonebridge off Snowmass Creek Road. The full trail climbs 8.4 miles to Snowmass Lake at 11,000 feet — a stunning alpine basin under Snowmass Peak and Hagerman Peak. Most hikers turn it into an overnight trip, but strong day hikers can push to the lake and back if they start early.
For a shorter version, hike in three miles to the Log Jam, where the creek widens into a beaver pond system choked with downed timber. It’s a satisfying half-day hike with big payoffs and minimal elevation gain.
Government Trail — Aspen to Snowmass Singletrack
The Government Trail connects Aspen and Snowmass along the flank of Burnt Mountain. It’s popular with mountain bikers but wonderful on foot when the aspens are in color. The full trail is around 10 miles point-to-point, but you can shuttle one-way or hike any section as an out-and-back. The wildflowers through Anaerobic Meadow in July are legendary.
Sky Mountain Park — Prime Singletrack with Big Views
Sky Mountain Park spans 2,500 acres of protected open space between Snowmass Village and the airport. The Cozy Line, Skyline Ridge, and Viewline trails weave together into loops of almost any length. Views run from the Elk Mountains to Mt. Sopris to the Roaring Fork Valley. Most trails are rated easy to moderate — ideal for visitors adjusting to the altitude before tackling bigger objectives.
Lost Forest and the Snowmass Ski Area in Summer
When the snow melts, the Snowmass Ski Area transforms into Lost Forest, an adventure hub with hiking, mountain biking, ziplines, and the BreathTaker Alpine Coaster. Take the Elk Camp Gondola up and hike the Tom Blake Trail, Vista Trail, or the short loop to the top of Elk Camp Summit at 11,325 feet. Gondola-assisted hikes are a great option for anyone who wants alpine terrain without a punishing climb — and a cold beer waiting at the Elk Camp Restaurant at the top.
Trail Tips for Snowmass Hiking
Start early. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Rockies from June through August. Plan to be off ridgelines and summits by noon.
Hydrate and respect the altitude. Snowmass Village sits at 8,200 feet. Many trails climb above 10,000. Drink more water than you think you need for your first day or two.
Carry layers. Mountain weather turns fast. A lightweight rain shell lives in every local’s daypack year-round.
Bear aware. Black bears are active throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Make noise on quiet trails, carry your food in a sealed pack, and never leave snacks in a car at trailheads.
Check trail conditions. Snow lingers on high passes into July, and monsoon rains can turn sections to mud in August. The Aspen-Sopris Ranger District page and local trailhead kiosks post current conditions.
